Last month Tris and his wife went on their first holiday as a married couple to the Greek island of Skopelos. Located within the Sporades archipelago, this small tranquil island (unspoilt due to the lack of a runway/airport) is probably not that well known a jewel for many of you reading this … mainly for the fact that it is missed entirely by the famous Meltemi thermal wind located further south in the Aegean. So what do you do when there is no wind? You SUP! Yet, with the suggestion of taking an inflatable SUP as his luggage being met with a look of contempt, Tris thought it best to succumb to the realisation it would probably be his first non-watersport holiday in a while… You can therefore imagine the excitement when Tris found a brochure for Sporades Life offering SUP Expeditions in the car hire office. A quick call and the adventure had been set for later in the week!
Sporades Life is the brainchild of Shane Jackson – an Irish fella who has lived on Skopelos for six years now, having originally visited relations and liked it so much, he stayed himself! BSUPA trained, he has a very professional set-up and knows the island really well, making you feel safe and that you’re in the hands of an excellent tour guide. The views around the island are breathtaking, going a long way to explaining why the island provided the backdrop to the blockbuster Mama Mia! (You can’t escape that fact when on the island as the film is referenced pretty much everywhere!) So, if you ever fancy an alternative escape, completely removed from the obvious summer windsurfing locations, you couldn’t go far wrong with Skopelos … and if you go, be sure to look Shane up.
