Nestled within the grounds of Portland’s Pennsylvania Castle Estate, the Cove Holiday Park is close to the centre and practical for the active enthusiast. With caravans, pods and chalets available, there is something to meet every budget, visit duration and preference. Next to the Park is the Cove Lodge, that offers luxury accommodation and stunning views, and then onto Pennsylvania Castle itself, which is also available for those special functions that demand a touch of class. For more information, get in touch with the park on 01305 821286 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Over the winter the OTC will provide core skill training once a month for Techno sailors. The training sessions will be mostly water-based, focussing on board handling skills and transitions in both light and strong winds, race tactics, starts and mark roundings. The winter period brings challenging conditions, and these training weekends are designed specifically to help the aspiring young racer become a stronger, more confident sailor. Dates for the training camps are as follows:
17-18th December ’16
21-22nd January ’17
25-26th February ’17
25-26th March ’17
For more information, please call the centre on 07817 717904. Many thanks to Jonathan Ashworth for helping with the artwork.
National Watersports Festival (NWF) Winter Windsurfing Camps kick off this weekend, providing there is a forecast! We will make a call this coming Thursday, posting on our website and FB page. If the wind is light (non-planing conditions) we will roll it over to the weekend of 10/11th December. Mark Hosegood from X-PRO TRAINING will be on site to help the slalom sailors, and all OTC SI’s will be on hand to coach the rest. For more information and to book your place, call the centre on 07817717904.
UPDATE: We are good to go! Forecast is looking epic (if a little cold), with wind on both days. Meet at the OTC centre at 10am Saturday.
They’re back after high demand! More details to follow shortly, but the dates will be:
- 3/4th December
- 7/8th January
- 11/12th February
- 11/12th March
Cost will be £30 for one day / £50 for 2 days and will include tuition from the OTC staff and a guest coach for the pro slalom group.
Will’s Warriors are at it again, raising money for the Will Mackaness Trust, and this time they have chosen the biggest challenge yet – to collectively travel as many miles as possible in one day. The first milestone will be 100 nautical miles (185km), followed by the biggie – the harbour’s record, which is over 264km!
The record is held by local speed guru Pete Young … hence the title of the challenge: BEAT THE LEGEND THAT IS PETE!
To sponsor the guys and raise money for the most worthwhile charity out there, enabling local children to experience the diversity of the watersports on their doorstep, click on this link to read more about their work to date.
Due to the forecast being so strong for the weekend, we are postponing the Team 15 event scheduled for 20th August until 17th September. With a large depression about to pass over and gusts of 40knots plus predicted, we feel it would be shrewd to delay the event so that some meaningful racing can take place. Apologies for any inconvenience caused, but look forward to hosting the event on the 17th September and seeing as many of you as possible competing.
We are very pleased to announce that “the future has arrived” and we now have OneWheels in stock and available for trial. Go to our OneWheel page for more information.
The OTC are delighted to be supporting the British Sailing Team this summer by holding free taster sessions for the RYA Sail for Gold Roadshow event here at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on Sunday 14th August.
If you’re feeling inspired by our athletes at Rio 2016, this is a fantastic opportunity to come and try windsurfing and sailing for free, with sessions running throughout the day from 09:30 until 15:30.
Whether you come by yourself or bring the whole family, a team of qualified instructors from the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre and the OTC will be on hand to take you afloat and give you an introduction to sailing and/or windsurfing. All sessions are free, and all equipment will be provided at no extra cost.
Alongside these taster sessions, everyone will have the opportunity to meet members of the British Sailing Team, enjoy some refreshments and learn more about the sport before watching the Olympic windsurfing (RS:X class) medal races on the screens. The racing in Rio will be shown on the screens in the WPNSA at 17:00 when racing is scheduled to start.
Local Weymouth windsurfers Bryony Shaw and Nick Dempsey hope to be competing on this day. Bryony will be looking to add to her 2008 bronze medal, whilst Nick will see if he can complete the full set, in his bid to add 2016 gold to his 2012 silver and 2004 bronze.
From 14-18 August, the RYA Sail for Gold Roadshow will travel around the UK, to England, Wales and Scotland, with plenty of on and off-the-water activities to get involved in at each stop. Members of the public are welcome to join each event, with taster sessions and sailing activities on offer during each Roadshow for those inspired by our sailors’ endeavours.
To find out more and register your interest in the free try windsurfing sessions, please visit www.rya.org.uk/roadshow
