5 schools, 33 pupils across 3 fleets; 25 completed races and lots of smiling faces! Dorset has got to be the only county in the UK that holds an inter-school competition for windsurfing, but 5 years on from the inaugural event and the competition is in rude health. We were pleased to see such strong teams put forward by both Budmouth College and All Saints this year, providing real local rivalry with multiple title winners Wey Valley. Great credit to Zara Horton and Tanya Williams from Poole High and Oscar Shaw from Poole Grammar for making the pilgrimage to Portland Harbour to compete as well.

The weather on the day was forecast to be miserable, but the gods were kind to us and the three fleets completed their racing before the heavens opened. The Challenge Fleet completed six races, reaching across the wind and back to the slipway. And with energy levels still not completely depleted, a number of SUP races were done for good measure to end the on water session. The Gold Fleet was split into Gold and Silver, both competing around a triangular course. The racing was close fought in both, with tactics and experience playing a large part in the Silver ranks. In the Gold Fleet, the RS:Ones were quick off the mark and going downwind, only to be caught back up by those on Technos during the upwind leg.

Thanks must be paid to the SSCos for helping to liaise with the schools and organise the School Games. Thanks also to the participating schools for organising travel and staff cover. The date for the 2017 Games has already been set in early July, so we’re hoping for even greater numbers. Thomas Hardye, Sunninghill, Dorchester Middle School and IPACA to name but a few – would be excellent for you to attend and swell the numbers even more for 2017.
