What a weekend – two days of good wind, wall-to-wall sunshine (on Saturday at least!), warm air temperature, good company and great tuition from a world champion. Add to that the backdrop of over 20 youths taking part in their RYA core-skills training, and it was a sight to behold down at the centre last weekend. The harbour and slipways were simply buzzing with activity!
Whilst the intention was to do some training before some ‘official’ racing, everyone was too busy learning from Ross during the sessions for any results to be registered. Instead, the training camp’s team were subjected to race-start practice after race-start practice … and once they were beginning to feel the burn, the focus was redirected to the gybe and mark-roundings. The most common remark was how much everyone had learnt during the weekend … the second one being how much they ached and how exhausted they were. A rewarding ache though! We’ll end with a quote from first-time participant Dave Libby:
“In how many other sports could you race with the pro’s and even a world record holder? With great advise on technique and words of encouragement I was made to feel at home despite bring out of my depth at times. Fantastic learning curve, a highly recommended experience… Many thanks to everyone involved.”
The next Camp is pencilled in for the weekend of 22nd – 23rd March – to be confirmed very shortly. Watch this space.
