What a difference a season makes! All these young windsurfing stars can be very proud of themselves for handling the conditions yesterday evening. Many of them have windsurfed for less than a year, so to handle the gusty force 5/6 winds on the course was really quite impressive. It was certainly too windy for the RS:One equipment bought by the Will Mackaness Trust with the Sport England grant they attained … albeit the racing tactics learnt by using the kit over the season no doubt came into play!

There were a total of sixteen entrants over the two fleets (Gold and Challenge), smashing out six slalom races in the Gold fleet and eight in the Challenge. The overall results are as follows (many thanks to Race Officer Neil Anstey):

Gold Fleet
1. Scotty Stallman
2. Alex Jones
3. Sam Anstey
4. Reed Russell
5. Harry Keenan
6. Tyler Baker
7. Ali Stevenson
8. James Bishop
9. Lily Thomas
10. Harry Whiles

Challenge Fleet
1. James Faley
2. Oliver Hammond
3. Ellie Wilcox
4. Adam Turnbull
5. Lucy Turnbull
6. Grace Goodwin

Special mention must go to Reed, who deservedly won the ‘Most Improved Windsurfer of the Year’ award. His ability has sky-rocketed this year thanks to the hours he has put in; he is often the first on the water and last off. It’s been a pleasure to see how much (and how quickly) he has improved.

Once the clocks change Team 15 will continue on Saturday mornings (10am-12pm) and continue throughout the winter for as long as the guys want to keep coming. If you’re keen, we are! Many thanks to Pam and the Will Mackaness Trust for their amazing support and to everyone who took part this year – been great to have you all down. And a special thanks to the parents for their endless car-ferrying, spectating in adverse conditions and tireless support. There is some real talent in this group – testament to just how good the conditions for teaching and training are in Portland Harbour!
